Adrienne Rich (1929-2012)

Adrienne Rich (1929-2012) was an American poet, essayist, and radical feminist whose work reshaped lesbian feminist thought and gender studies. Her 1980 essay "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence" argued that heterosexuality is a social institution women are pressured into rather than a natural default, and it introduced the idea of a lesbian continuum of woman-identified bonds. Her poetry, including Diving into the Wreck (1973) and Twenty-One Love Poems (1976), examined women's lives, feminist consciousness, and love between women with unusual clarity and force. In 1997 she declined the National Medal of Arts in protest of cuts to arts funding and wider inequality, a stand in keeping with her lifelong commitment to political principle. She remained an influential voice on the radical left for decades.
