Love
A fundamental human bond of affection and attachment that LGBTQ+ people have claimed, celebrated, and fought to have recognized across history and cultures.
Love is a basic human experience of deep affection and attachment, and for LGBTQ+ people it has also been a site of struggle and celebration. Queer love has shaped literature, art, and activism for centuries, from Sappho's lyric poetry to the modern movement for marriage equality that reached the United States nationwide in 2015. Because same-sex intimacy has often been criminalized, pathologized, or hidden, claiming love openly has carried both personal and political weight. LGBTQ+ communities have also widened what love can mean, honoring chosen family, mutual community care, and self-acceptance alongside romantic and sexual partnership. The phrase 'love is love' captures this insistence that queer love deserves the same recognition as any other.
