Chosen Family

Chosen family, also called found family or family of choice, describes non-biological kinship bonds that people deliberately build for mutual support and love. The concept is especially meaningful in LGBTQ+ communities, where some people face rejection or distance from the families they were born into. Chosen family fills that gap with people who show up as parents, siblings, mentors, and lifelong friends by choice rather than obligation. Research on marriage and family counseling defines these bonds as deliberately chosen for support, and studies indicate chosen family can promote psychological resilience when support from a family of origin is missing. The idea has deep roots in queer history, including ballroom "house" culture, and remains a core way many LGBTQ+ people find belonging and care.
