Chosen Famliy

Chosen family describes the people, friends, partners, mentors, and community members, who provide love, care, and belonging to LGBTQ+ individuals, often when biological family is absent, distant, or rejecting. For many queer and trans people, chosen family is not a substitute for "real" family. It is family, offering the affirmation, support, and sense of belonging that people turn to in hardship and celebration. The concept has deep roots in LGBTQ+ history, including the AIDS crisis, when queer communities cared for one another through illness and loss. It remains one of the most enduring institutions in LGBTQ+ life, though these bonds often lack the formal legal recognition given to blood or marriage ties.
