Queer

Queer is one of the most powerful and contested words in LGBTQ+ vocabulary. It entered English in the 16th century meaning strange, odd, or peculiar, and by the late 19th century it was used as a slur against effeminate men and men who had sex with men. Beginning in the late 1980s, activists and academics, including groups like Queer Nation, reclaimed it as a defiant term of self-definition. Today queer works two ways: as an umbrella label for anyone who is not straight and/or not cisgender, and as a critical framework that challenges fixed categories of gender and sexuality. Its use stays generational and personal. Some older people still hear it as a wound, while many younger people claim it as their most comfortable identity.
