Cisgender

Cisgender describes a person whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth, meaning someone who is not transgender. The prefix cis- is Latin for "on this side of," set against trans-, meaning "across" or "on the other side of." The term was coined in the early 1990s as a neutral antonym to transgender and entered mainstream dictionaries around 2015 as public conversation about gender broadened. Its purpose is to give the more common experience a name of its own, so that being non-transgender is not framed as the invisible default against which trans people are the exception. Being cisgender is one way of relating to gender and is no more natural or valid than any other. The word is now standard in academic, medical, and community use.
