Altersex
Altersex is an umbrella term for people whose relationship to their sex characteristics falls outside typical binary male or female categories.
Altersex is an umbrella term for a person's sex characteristics or embodiment that fall outside the typical binary of male and female. The word combines "alter," meaning different or another possibility, with "sex," referring to physical traits like anatomy, hormones, and chromosomes. Some people use it to describe a felt or desired relationship to their body that they experience as neither strictly male nor female, whether that comes from being intersex, from gender-affirming changes, or from body modification. It is a community-coined identity term rather than a medical one, and it lets people describe their embodiment without the clinical framing often attached to intersex language. Not everyone who is intersex identifies as altersex, and the two terms are not interchangeable.
