Intersex

Intersex is an umbrella term for people born with any of several variations in sex characteristics: chromosome patterns, hormones, gonads, or genitals that, in the words of the UN human rights office, do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies. It covers dozens of naturally occurring traits, sometimes grouped under the clinical label differences in sex development. Intersex is about biology, not sexual orientation or gender identity, and intersex people can hold any orientation or identity. Prevalence estimates vary widely depending on which traits are counted, from roughly 0.02 percent for visibly ambiguous genitals at birth to a broader and contested 1.7 percent figure. Advocates focus on bodily autonomy and ending non-consensual medical procedures on infants.
