AMAB

AMAB stands for "assigned male at birth." It describes a person who was designated male at birth, usually based on the appearance of their external anatomy at delivery or on an ultrasound. The term is a descriptor of a birth assignment, not an identity, and it is widely used in transgender, nonbinary, and intersex conversations to separate the sex someone was assigned from the gender they actually are. An AMAB person may identify as a man, a woman, nonbinary, or another gender. In healthcare, noting that a patient is AMAB can help providers give accurate care while still respecting the person's gender identity. Its counterpart is AFAB, assigned female at birth.
