Transgender, often shortened to trans, is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity or expression differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. It includes trans men, trans women, and many nonbinary people. Understanding the term means separating a few ideas: the sex marked on a birth certificate, a person's internal sense of their own gender, how they express it, and who they are attracted to, which are all distinct. Being transgender is a natural part of human diversity rather than a disorder, a choice, or a recent invention, a view affirmed by major medical and psychological organizations. Trans people seek the same things anyone does, including legal recognition, access to healthcare, and social acceptance.
