Trans

Trans is a widely used umbrella term for people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth, including trans men, trans women, and many nonbinary people.

Trans is a shorthand and umbrella term covering people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. It includes transgender men, transgender women, and many nonbinary, genderqueer, genderfluid, and agender people, though not everyone under that range uses the label for themselves. The prefix trans- comes from Latin, meaning "across from," and pairs with cis-, meaning "on the same side," the term for people who are not trans. "Trans" became the preferred everyday word as a broader, less clinical alternative to older terms like "transsexual." Being trans is recognized as a normal part of human diversity by major medical and mental health organizations.
