Attachment refers to the emotional bonds people form with one another, a concept queer communities often extend to chosen family and community networks.
Attachment describes the emotional bonds people form in close relationships. In psychology, attachment theory holds that humans are wired for connection and that secure bonds support wellbeing across a lifetime. In LGBTQ+ contexts, attachment is often discussed beyond romantic partners to include friendships, chosen family, and community ties. Many queer people who have faced rejection from families of origin build strong attachment networks with people who accept them fully. These chosen bonds can become primary sources of love, safety, and belonging. Attachment is not a term unique to LGBTQ+ life, but it carries particular weight in communities where support often has to be found and built rather than inherited.
