Basic

"Basic" is an American slang term used, often pejoratively, to describe people or tastes seen as predictably mainstream, unoriginal, or trend-following. It grew out of the fuller phrase "basic bitch," which rose from hip hop culture and rap music between roughly 2011 and 2014 before spreading across the internet and into everyday speech. Critics note the term is frequently aimed at young women and can carry a dismissive or classist edge. In queer and internet culture it is often used more lightly, deployed with irony and camp to tease a friend as much as to insult a stranger. Whether it stings or lands as affection depends heavily on tone and who is saying it.
