Anti-Drag Law
An anti-drag law is legislation that restricts or criminalizes drag performances, typically by banning them in public spaces or where minors may be present.
Anti-drag laws are measures that restrict or criminalize drag performances. A wave of them moved through U.S. state legislatures beginning in 2023, often by classifying drag as "adult cabaret" or "sexually oriented" entertainment and banning it on public property or anywhere a minor could see it. Tennessee passed the first such law in 2023, and the Human Rights Campaign tracked more than 40 similar bills across the country. Critics, including HRC and free-speech advocates, argue the vague wording could criminalize ordinary performers and Pride events, and courts have blocked or struck down several as violations of First Amendment protected expression. Supporters frame them as shielding children, though drag has a long, mainstream history in theater and entertainment.
