American Dream and Promise Act, The

The American Dream and Promise Act is proposed federal legislation that would give Dreamers and certain other immigrants a path to permanent residency and citizenship.

The American Dream and Promise Act is a proposed federal law that would create a path to permanent residency and citizenship for immigrants brought to the United States as children, often called Dreamers, along with holders of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED). By one Migration Policy Institute estimate, it could benefit as many as 4.4 million people. The House of Representatives has passed versions of the bill, including H.R. 6 in 2021, but it has not cleared the Senate. It matters to LGBTQ+ communities because many undocumented immigrants are LGBTQ+ and can face added risks tied to both immigration status and identity.
