Status

Status usually refers to a person's HIV status, meaning whether they are HIV-positive or HIV-negative.

In LGBTQ+ and sexual health settings, status most often means a person's HIV status: whether they are living with HIV or are HIV-negative. Talking openly about status is part of informed sexual decision-making, and in some places disclosure of a positive status carries legal weight. The conversation has shifted with modern science. PrEP helps HIV-negative people stay negative, and the U=U framework (Undetectable = Untransmittable) confirms that someone on treatment with an undetectable viral load has effectively zero risk of passing HIV to sexual partners. Understanding status, rather than making assumptions, helps reduce stigma and supports healthier communities.
