Passing (Gender)

In a gender context, passing means being perceived by others as the gender you identify with, without being read as transgender. For many trans people, passing can offer safety, ease daily interactions, and reduce gender dysphoria. The concept is also debated within trans communities. Some argue the pressure to pass reinforces narrow, binary expectations of how men and women should look, while others note that for many people passing is a matter of physical safety, not preference. A closely related term is 'stealth,' living without others knowing one is trans. Importantly, a trans person's identity and validity never depend on whether they pass.
