Read
To read someone is to call out their flaws or pretensions with sharp, precise, witty criticism, a verbal art form rooted in Black and Latino queer ballroom culture.
In ballroom culture and Black and Latino queer communities, to "read" someone means to point out their flaws, mistakes, or pretensions with precision and wit. A good read is cutting but clever, valued as much for its craft as its sting. Reading differs from throwing shade: a read is direct and out in the open, while shade is subtle and implied. As RuPaul's line goes, "reading is fundamental," and drag legend Dorian Corey explained the distinction memorably in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning. Through drag and ballroom's influence on pop culture, phrases like "the library is open" and "reading for filth" have entered wider gay slang and mainstream use.
