Apretude

Apretude is the brand name for injectable cabotegravir, a long-acting shot given every two months to prevent HIV as PrEP.

Apretude is ViiV Healthcare's brand name for cabotegravir extended-release injectable suspension, used as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV. The FDA approved it in December 2021, making it the first long-acting injectable PrEP option. After an initial period, it is given as an injection every two months instead of a daily pill. It is approved for adults and adolescents weighing at least 35 kg who are at risk of sexually acquiring HIV and who test HIV negative before starting. Approval was based on the HPTN 083 and HPTN 084 trials in men who have sex with men, transgender women, and cisgender women, where it proved superior to daily oral Truvada. Real-world studies have shown effectiveness above 99 percent.
