Conversion Therapy Ban

Conversion therapy bans are laws that prohibit attempts to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity, most often by licensed mental health professionals working with minors. They rest on the consensus of every major U.S. medical and psychiatric body that the practice is ineffective and harmful. Many U.S. states and dozens of countries have enacted full or partial bans. The issue remains legally contested. In its 2025 decision in Chiles v. Salazar, the U.S. Supreme Court took up a challenge to Colorado's ban, prompting states like Colorado to revise their laws to keep protections in place. Groups such as The Trevor Project and HRC continue to push for broader protections.
