Descovy

Descovy is a brand-name medication made by Gilead that combines two antiretroviral drugs, emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF). It is taken as one pill once a day. Descovy is used as part of a combination regimen to treat people living with HIV, and in 2019 the FDA also approved it for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV in HIV-negative adults and adolescents weighing at least 35 kg. Its PrEP approval currently excludes people at risk through receptive vaginal sex, since that group was not studied in the DISCOVER trial. Compared with the older PrEP pill Truvada, Descovy showed similar effectiveness with a somewhat better bone and kidney safety profile.
