Flag Dancers / Flaggers

Flag dancers, also called flaggers, are performers who spin, undulate, and wave large silk flags in flowing, rhythmic movement set to music. The practice, sometimes known as spin flagging or flow flagging, grew out of the wider flow arts world alongside fire spinning and poi. Within queer nightlife it became especially beloved at circuit parties and dance events, where flaggers add color, spectacle, and a sense of joyful, communal release on the dance floor. For many in the community the dance carries a meditative, healing quality, offering both self-expression and connection. Note that flagging can also refer to the hanky code, a separate practice, so context usually makes the meaning clear.
