Cherry Grove
Cherry Grove is a beach hamlet on Fire Island, New York, home to one of the oldest LGBTQ+ communities in the United States.
Cherry Grove is a small beach community on Fire Island, off the south shore of Long Island, New York. Its remoteness made it a refuge for gay men, lesbians, and bohemian artists as early as the 1920s and 1930s, and by the 1940s and 1950s it was a widely known haven where queer people could gather away from the surveillance and hostility of city life. It is home to the Cherry Grove Community Association and a long tradition of self-governance, drag, and theater, including the annual Invasion of the Pines. Alongside the neighboring hamlet of the Pines, Cherry Grove remains a treasured summer destination and a landmark of American LGBTQ+ history.
