Contract

In BDSM, a contract is a negotiated agreement, written or spoken, that spells out the terms of a consensual power exchange between partners.

In BDSM, a contract is a negotiated agreement between partners, often a dominant and a submissive, that lays out the terms of their power exchange relationship. It can be written or verbal and typically covers limits, safe words, roles and responsibilities, activities that are on or off the table, duration, and expectations on both sides. The point is clarity and communication, making sure everyone understands what they are agreeing to before play begins. A BDSM contract is not a legally binding document and cannot override the law or a person's right to withdraw consent at any time. Many people find the act of negotiating and signing one meaningful in itself, a shared ritual that frames the dynamic and keeps it consensual.
