BDSM is an umbrella term drawn from three pairings: Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and submission, and Sadism and Masochism. It covers a wide range of consensual erotic practices built around power exchange, restraint, sensation, and role-play, where partners often take on complementary roles involving a deliberate imbalance of power. The initialism is first recorded in a 1991 Usenet post. BDSM is practiced by people of every sexual orientation and gender, and it has deep roots in LGBTQ+ leather and kink communities. Informed consent, clear communication, and negotiated boundaries are its foundation. Community frameworks like SSC (Safe, Sane, Consensual) and RACK (Risk-Aware Consensual Kink) describe how practitioners approach ethical play.
