Henry Gerber House, Chicago, Illinois

The Henry Gerber House is a stone-fronted rowhouse at 1710 North Crilly Court in Chicago's Old Town, where German immigrant Henry Gerber lived as a tenant in 1924 and 1925. There he founded the Society for Human Rights, which received an Illinois charter in December 1924 and is recognized as the first chartered homosexual rights organization in the country. Inspired by the early gay rights movement he had seen in Germany, Gerber and a small group published a newsletter called Friendship and Freedom before police arrests shut the group down within a year. The house was named a Chicago Landmark in 2001 and a National Historic Landmark in 2015, honoring its place as a foundational site in American LGBTQ+ history.
