Gay rights refers to the legal and civil rights movement seeking equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. In the United States, milestones include the American Psychiatric Association removing homosexuality from its diagnostic manual in 1973, the repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in 2010, nationwide marriage equality through Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, and the 2020 Supreme Court ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County holding that workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity is unlawful. Significant challenges remain, including new anti-transgender legislation, religious exemption debates, and the criminalization of same-sex relationships in dozens of countries around the world.
