Equality

Equality means giving all people the same rights and treatment under the law regardless of characteristics like sexual orientation or gender identity.

Equality means treating people the same under the law and in public life, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or other characteristics. In LGBTQ+ advocacy, it names the goal of holding the same legal rights and social standing as heterosexual and cisgender people. Equality is often contrasted with equity, which recognizes that treating everyone identically does not always produce fair outcomes because people start from different circumstances. Equity provides tailored support to close those gaps. Both ideas aim at fairness, and many advocates pursue equality of rights alongside equity in access, resources, and opportunity so that formal legal protections translate into real, lived fairness for LGBTQ+ people.
