Potato Queen

"Potato queen" is a piece of gay slang, sometimes used self-referentially, for an Asian gay man who is primarily or exclusively attracted to white men. In this shorthand "rice" stands for Asian and "potato" for white, so a "rice queen" is the counterpart term for a non-Asian man, usually white, drawn mainly to Asian men. The vocabulary is playful within some communities but also points to real tensions around racial preference, fetishization, and how broader racial hierarchies shape desire. Writers on the subject note these dynamics can leave the Asian partner in a lesser position. Like most such labels, it lands very differently applied to someone else than chosen for oneself.
