U=U

U=U means Undetectable equals Untransmittable: a person with HIV who takes treatment and keeps an undetectable viral load cannot pass HIV to sexual partners.

U=U stands for Undetectable equals Untransmittable. It is a public health message backed by an overwhelming body of scientific evidence: a person living with HIV who takes antiretroviral therapy and maintains an undetectable viral load has effectively no risk of transmitting HIV to sexual partners. The Prevention Access Campaign launched the U=U message in 2016, and it is now endorsed by the CDC, the NIH, and major health bodies worldwide. U=U has reshaped HIV prevention and helped reduce the stigma long attached to living with HIV, which lets people build intimate relationships without fear of transmitting the virus. It also shows why testing and staying on treatment matter.
