Untransmissible
Untransmissible reflects the U=U message that a person with HIV who keeps an undetectable viral load through treatment cannot sexually transmit the virus.
Untransmissible is tied to the Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) message: a person living with HIV who takes antiretroviral treatment as prescribed and keeps an undetectable viral load has effectively no risk, described by the CDC as zero risk, of sexually transmitting HIV to a partner. The idea grew from large studies that recorded no linked transmissions when the partner with HIV was virally suppressed, and it was carried worldwide by Bruce Richman and the Prevention Access Campaign starting in 2016. The message is now endorsed by the CDC and other health bodies. It is used in clinics and in advocacy to fight HIV stigma and to support people living with HIV in dating and intimacy with confidence.
