Alex Newell

Alex Newell (born 1992, they/them) is an American actor and singer from Lynn, Massachusetts. Newell first drew wide attention on the Fox musical series Glee, playing Wade "Unique" Adams, one of the earliest transgender characters on a network primetime show. Later roles included Mo on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist and Asaka in the 2018 Broadway revival of Once on This Island. In 2023, Newell won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for the comedy Shucked. Alongside Harrison Ghee, who won the same night, Newell became one of the first openly nonbinary performers honored in a Tony acting category. Newell is widely celebrated for expanding queer and nonbinary visibility on stage and screen.
