Code-Switching

Code-switching began as a linguistics term for alternating between languages or dialects, and it has grown to describe shifting your tone, mannerisms, and self-presentation to match a given environment. For LGBTQ+ people it often means moving between queer community spaces, where identity can be fully visible, and mainstream settings like work, school, or family, where parts of that identity may be softened or hidden. People do this for acceptance, professional survival, or physical safety. The practice is closely tied to marginalized communities more broadly and demands ongoing emotional and mental effort. Many describe it as exhausting, and its constant background labor is one reason inclusive spaces matter.
