Don't Say Gay

"Don't Say Gay" is the nickname critics gave Florida's Parental Rights in Education Act (HB 1557), signed by Governor Ron DeSantis on March 28, 2022, and effective July 1 that year. As passed, it barred classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade. A 2023 state board rule and follow-up legislation (HB 1069) expanded the restrictions toward all grade levels. Supporters framed it as protecting parents' rights; opponents argue it stigmatizes LGBTQ+ students and families and chills honest discussion in schools. The law drew national protest and a public clash with the Walt Disney Company. Several other states have since passed similar measures.
