Down-Low / DL
"Down-low" (DL) describes a man who has sex with men while publicly presenting as straight and keeping that behavior private.
"Down-low," often shortened to DL, describes a man who has sex with other men while publicly identifying as straight or otherwise not disclosing his same-sex behavior. The phrase entered wide use in the early 2000s through news and pop-culture coverage that focused heavily, and often sensationally, on Black men, though men of any background live on the DL. The framing tied into real questions about race, religion, masculinity, community pressure, and the specific shapes homophobia can take. Public-health researchers have cautioned against using the term as a scapegoat for HIV transmission, since the evidence does not support that narrative. The lived reality behind the label is layered and personal.
