Dynasty

Dynasty was a glamorous prime-time soap opera that aired on ABC from 1981 to 1989. Set among oil-rich families and high fashion, it drew a devoted gay following for its extravagant costumes, theatrical feuds between Joan Collins and Linda Evans, and unapologetic excess. Its aesthetic of wealth, spectacle, and melodrama made it a lasting reference point in camp sensibility. Dynasty also featured Steven Carrington, one of network television's earliest ongoing gay characters. His storylines were uneven, and the writers repeatedly shifted him toward relationships with women, a change actor Al Corley publicly resisted before leaving the role. A 2017 reboot on The CW revisited the family with more openly queer storytelling.
