End Racial and Religious Profiling Act
The End Racial and Religious Profiling Act is proposed federal legislation that would prohibit law enforcement from relying on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation when deciding whom to stop, search, or investigate.
The End Racial and Religious Profiling Act (ERRPA) is a bill introduced repeatedly in Congress, most recently as H.R. 5727 in the 119th Congress. It would ban discriminatory profiling by federal, state, and local law enforcement, require data collection and training, and let people harmed by profiling seek relief in court. The bill matters to LGBTQ+ communities because LGBTQ+ people, especially transgender people and LGBTQ+ people of color, are stopped, searched, and arrested at disproportionate rates. By naming gender identity and sexual orientation among the protected characteristics, ERRPA aims to curb the biased policing that many LGBTQ+ people experience. It has not yet become law.
