Extra

"Extra" is a slang term for behavior, style, or a person that is dramatically over-the-top, excessive, or theatrical. Its roots are in African American Vernacular English, where it described someone doing far too much, and it spread widely through social media and pop culture. Depending on tone, it can be a gentle jab at overreacting or a genuine compliment for being flashy and unapologetically expressive. In LGBTQ+ culture, being called extra often lands as praise: a nod to bold self-presentation and a refusal to shrink or play it safe. Like many AAVE-origin words, it moved into mainstream use, and crediting that origin matters when using it.
