Flamboyant

Flamboyant describes an extravagant, colorful, theatrical style or personality, a word long associated with gay men and often reclaimed as a form of proud self-expression.

Flamboyant describes an extravagant, vivid, and theatrical style or personality, marked by bold gestures, dress, and flair. In everyday use it applies to anyone or anything showy, but it has long been attached to gay men in particular. Depending on who is speaking, the label can carry judgment or affection. Many gay and queer people have reclaimed flamboyance as a form of radical self-expression: a refusal to shrink, tone themselves down, or perform straightness for others' comfort. Used that way, it celebrates visibility and confidence rather than treating them as something to apologize for. As with many such words, tone and speaker shape whether it lands as a compliment or a jab.
