Gay Bar

A gay bar is a drinking or nightlife venue that primarily serves LGBTQ+ customers, historically gay men, though lesbian bars and mixed queer spaces exist under the same umbrella. For over a century these bars have been central to queer life, offering community and safety in eras when being openly gay was criminalized or dangerous. That role made them targets of police raids, and one such raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York City in June 1969 sparked days of resistance that helped launch the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The number of gay bars in the United States has dropped sharply in recent decades, driven by rising social acceptance, dating apps, and rising costs, yet they remain important community anchors.
