Stonewall Inn

The Stonewall Inn is a bar on Christopher Street in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. In the late 1960s it was Mafia-run and one of the few places serving the city's most marginalized queer people, including drag queens, transgender women, and homeless youth. When police raided it in the early morning of June 28, 1969, patrons and neighbors fought back, sparking several days of protest now known as the Stonewall uprising. A year later, the first Pride marches were held to mark the anniversary. The site was named a New York City Landmark in 2015 and, along with adjacent Christopher Park, became part of the Stonewall National Monument, the first US national monument dedicated to LGBTQ+ history, in 2016. A bar still operates on the spot today.
