Gay Card

Gay card is a lighthearted, made-up concept rather than any real document. In everyday humor, people joke that a gay card can be revoked when someone fails at a supposed marker of gay culture, or awarded when someone nails one. Saying turn in your gay card pokes fun at the idea that there is one correct way to be gay, and the joke usually lands as affectionate teasing among friends. The term plays on stereotypes while gently mocking them, which is part of why it stays popular in casual queer conversation. Taken seriously it would be gatekeeping, but as a running joke it mostly signals belonging and shared humor.
