Gay Cure Therapy
"Gay cure therapy" is an outdated name for so-called conversion therapy, the discredited and harmful practice of trying to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.
"Gay cure therapy" is a dated term for what is now usually called so-called conversion therapy or reparative therapy: practices that falsely claim to change a person's sexual orientation from gay to straight, or a person's gender identity. It rests on the debunked idea that being LGBTQ+ is a disorder to be fixed. Every major U.S. medical and mental health body, including the American Medical Association and American Psychological Association, condemns the practice as ineffective and harmful, and research links it to worse mental health outcomes. GLAAD advises framing it as a discredited practice. A growing number of U.S. states and countries have banned it, especially for minors.
