"In face" and "outta face" are drag terms about whether a performer has their makeup and persona on. To be "in face" (or "in drag") is to have the full painted mug and the character in place, ready to perform. "Outta face" (or "out of drag") describes the performer's ordinary, everyday look with the makeup off. The word "face" carries real weight in drag culture, where a beautifully painted "mug" is a mark of skill and "serving face" means delivering a striking look. These terms mark the line between the constructed stage persona and the person underneath it, a distinction central to how drag performers talk about their craft.
