Light In The Pants

"Light in the pants" is a variant of the mid-twentieth-century American euphemism "light in the loafers," carrying the same suggestion that a man is gay. Both phrases work on the same logic, associating homosexuality with a perceived lightness or a lack of conventional masculine heft. Expressions like these were part of the underground and coded vocabulary that LGBTQ+ people and others used when open identification was dangerous or socially impossible. The phrase is largely dated now and is of interest mostly as an example of how such indirect, often mocking language marked gay identity in an earlier era.
