Limp-wristed
A derogatory stereotype that mocks gay or effeminate men by linking a loosely bent wrist to homosexuality.
Limp-wristed is a derogatory phrase used to mock men perceived as gay or effeminate by tying a loosely held or bent wrist to homosexuality. It appeared in English in the early to mid 20th century and became a shorthand insult that policed masculinity, treating any softness in a man's posture or gesture as a sign of being gay. Dictionaries flag it as offensive slang. The stereotype has no basis in fact, since gender expression and sexual orientation are separate things. Some queer people reclaim the image with humor and camp, but the term itself remains an insult when aimed at someone.
