Mattachine Society

The Mattachine Society, founded in 1950 in Los Angeles by Harry Hay and a small group of friends, was one of the earliest sustained gay rights organizations in the United States. At a time when homosexuality was criminalized and pathologized in every state, it offered a secret support network built on a cell structure to protect members. Hay, a former Communist Party organizer, promoted the then-radical idea that gay people were an oppressed cultural minority who deserved rights and group consciousness.
