Mephedrone (Meph, M-Cat, Meow-Meow)

Mephedrone, also called meph, M-Cat, or meow-meow, is a synthetic stimulant in the cathinone family, chemically related to the natural stimulant found in the khat plant. It first spread in the late 2000s as a cheap online 'legal high' before many countries banned it, including the UK, which made it a Class B drug in 2010. Its effects resemble a mix of amphetamines and MDMA, producing euphoria, sociability, and heightened sexual desire. Because of that last effect, it is one of several drugs associated with chemsex, the use of substances to enhance or extend sexual activity among some gay and bisexual men. Risks include heart problems, anxiety, psychosis, and dependence. Harm-reduction and chemsex support services exist in many cities.
