National Center For Transgender Equality (NCTE)

The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) was a leading U.S. advocacy organization for transgender rights, founded in 2003 by activist Mara Keisling in Washington, D.C. It focused on policy and media work, pushing for change on identity documents, healthcare, housing, immigration, and other issues, and it led the coalition that fought for a trans-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act. NCTE was best known for the U.S. Transgender Survey, the largest survey of transgender people in the country. On October 1, 2024, NCTE merged with the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund to form a single organization, Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE), which continues the work today.
