New Way

New Way is one of the recognized styles of voguing in ballroom culture, alongside Old Way and Vogue Femme. It developed in the late 1980s and 1990s as dancers pushed the form beyond the clean lines and symmetry of Old Way. New Way emphasizes precision, rigid geometric arm and hand movements, and displays of extreme flexibility, including contortion-style illusions such as "arms control" and limb-bending clicks. Where Old Way draws on posing and modeling and Vogue Femme leans into fluid, exaggerated femininity, New Way rewards control and pretzel-like body manipulation. It grew out of the Black and Latino queer ballroom scene of Harlem and remains a competitive category walked at balls today.
